So sorry to hear about Charlie. He was a valued member of the Shania Twain Community and we will all miss him. We will not forget him. It was nice to see the photos of Charlie and Shania. I am so pleased he got to meet her.

Thanks for posting this picture Bob. I have spent the better part of today crying and missing Charlie, and I have also spent much of my time remembering his humour, his ability to make you laugh so hard you cried....so I guess today, Charlie has brought me to tears again.

I really miss him.

Agreed on all above Tracy

Hi Everyone
After Watching Shania's debut episode on OWN last night I got a "lets go too the STC forums and see what everyone thinks of the show thought"
Then I saw this first and just read the entire 10 pages and teared up reading all your tributes and pictures shared of Charlie.

Tracy, Ren, Bob A, Richard, Deb and everyone you all speak heartfelt truth here and I could quote all your posts here with and totally agree but won't
just great tributes of words and emotions too your friend here.. just gotta say I miss all you guys and your faces and company. wish I could have been around more
in the last few years. as with living life and other things in life they pull you in different directions and I say I truely miss you guys

I first learned of Charlie's passing the day after, Charlie and I's longtime concert friend Kristy text'd me that he lost his battle with leukemia
She went too the visitation the night before the funeral and told me some stories of this celebration and morning of Charlie. I could not make this due too the nature of my work.
all through that week I was torn and still I often think of him and think of the wonderful times we had.

I have some pictures I wanted too share with you all too.
the first three was Seeing LeAnn Rimes(his second fav singer) with Ted and I
Image
he won a fifty fifty lotto drawing this night at the concert and we had too do a bling shot :)

Kristy Charlie and I went too see a Martina Mcbride show this was after

In Saginaw we saw and Meet Sara Evans, this was Charlies first meet and greet with Sara

I miss you guys here.
&
I Miss you Charlie
Can't wait for our next show. I bet the setlists and Artist lineups are something up there

***** Just noticed the pictures are kind've huge in my reply here if you want too see the whole picture right click on image and click view, Cause Ted is in that first picture. sorry

Thanks for the pic of Charlie in group David. It's a good one.

I remember meeting you and Charlie and Steve Loop for the first time, before the Shania concert in Grand Rapids. I was there with Richard Sessions and Tom Waller. That was the night Richard won the raffle, and got invited up on stage for a few words and photo beside Shania. He took Tom up with him.

Natasha Mirkovitch (?sp) was also there, and band member Randall Waller came down to talk with her before the show, and again after. She was a member of the ST group and she had cut the ribbon at the Opening of the STC in Timmins back in 2001.

Richard delivered some memorable words that night in Grand Rapids. Other fans had traditionally been giving Shania gifts of flowers, teddy bears, etc. Richard said he would give her something on behalf of Shania fans everywhere, which she could take with her forever. She kinda paused and hesitantly said "okay...?, not knowing what to expect. He said "I only have these words to give. Shania, your music makes the world a better place." The audience kinda caught it's collective breath, then said "A-A-A-W-W-W!!!". Then the applause began, and rose slowly but lengthily, into a cresendo.

There was a large family of attractive women up near the rafters, who let out a scream. We had met these Flanigan girls, at some upscale club before the concert. They were sure Richard and Tom were members of Shania's staff or crew, because they had colorful lanyards and ID cards, from some where. The ladies could not be dissuaded.

Then when they saw Richard and Tom on stage, that was all the proof they needed to finalize their convictions. They came down and met us again after the concert. The Flanigan gals treated us like deity. Even though I'm not a fan, I don't remember ever being hugged by so many pretty women in one night.

I've only seen two Shania concerts, but they were both memorable. The other one was the outdoors concert at Grant Park in chicago, a prelim for the UP! Tour in 2003.

Bob Yep I remember that night in Grand Rapids with alllllll you described! I remember meeting ya too :)
And David thanks for that photo of Charlie and us 2 meeting Matt Evans thanks for sharing it. it was a perfect summer night as I remember it!

Steve,

Thanks for the added pics of Charlie & co.

I'd like to see that first pic in full if it includes Ted. The part visible here now, looks high quality, but Ted is not visible. Don't remember having a good pic of Ted, tho he was a great person to meet and talk in person, up in Ontario some yrs ago. Trying to remember the first contact. Seems like we were at some eatery, maybe it was about the time we met the STC bus in Toronto, before the ride up to Deerhurst, then Timmins. Anyway, Ted was eager to meet me. I guess he liked some of my posts on the various ST msg boards. We got to gabbing together in the corner of the restaurant booth. Like two peas in a pod, sometimes you don't notice anything else going on around you. Well, poor Marika, my good friend who'd come all the way from Finnland, for her first visit to the STC, was trying to get a photo of me. But my jaw was flapping so fast as I talked with Ted, it was like the blades on an electric fan, and Marika never was able to get a good picture in focus.

Ted got along well with Charlie too. I don't remember if Charlie was there that year. Probably so. Tracy would know. She wrote a letter for Charlie's funeral, and I think it described Charlie's first appearance at the STC, and the reaction to him by fans, herself, and STC staff.

I may have been a bit slower to realize Charlie's abilities and character than other people were. I'm a slow learner in some ways. But like the hit 1960's song about the gal on roller skates, I don't go very fast, but I go pretty far. By the time all was said and done, I got to know Charlie, and appreciate him, almost as well as anyone.

Hey Bob as I said in my text above, right click on those big pictures and click view it will open in a new page then you can right click and Save the jpeg if you wish
and yeah on Ted

Totally agree on the quality of conversations with Ted I miss that too. (Bob great story and picture you told of it)

I don't think I told allllllllll of this in my initial review of the Fancon in 05 but since this is a Charlie story thread here we go

Charlie won a contest (Via another Tracy promotion brilliant idea) for a lodging in the Shania Twain suite for that fancon unfortunately Charlie could not make this Fancon due too a work thing he could not get out of and Charlie offers the Room too Ted and I and we took that friends offer Tracy of course agreed too Charlies request for the transfer of the win and Ted and I were super excited Charlie did this for us.. Ted knew JD Blair a bit outside of his Shania ness connection and one night JD came too our room for a chat being that Charlie could not make this and we were sitting in his room he won someone I forget if it was me or Ted thought we should call Charlie and Put JD on phone and we did, I could just hear the smile on Charlies Face on the other end. Soo glad we were able too bring a part of the Fancon home to him being that he soo despertly(sp?) wanted to be there.

Charlie, Ted (where ever you are) and I thank you once again.

Ooops!
You said RIGHT click. I had tried a left click. Yup, it works fine now.

When you get to be my age, you may understand about limited attention span, memory, and vision.

I had to chuckle at the pic of Ted behind the hat and sun glasses. He reminded me of one of the 4 prominent characters in the cartoon show - King Of The Hill. I don't watch that show often, but have seen it enuf to remember the characters.

Let's see if I can plunk in a sample pic here.

Yep, that would be Ted at right..., in both pics.

Hmn..., that's a sweet story. I had heard some parts of it, but never in full context before. JD Blair is a swell guy. He and Randall X sat at my table one night after dinner, during the auction. I think there were just the 3 of us, or at least the 4th person never participated in the conversation much. There was some fine joke cracking goin' on, amidst some more serious and amazing stuff. I've never met Eilleen in person. Had opportunities, but declined. I wasn't interested in the likely imbalance in conversation due to her fame, since I'm not a fan. But meeting and talking with Randall and JD, felt like I had just acquired two life-long brothers, they were so friendly, talented and supportive.

Well, I sent a PM to a former Michigander, to compare notes about schedules. I saw a msg that he's heading back to Michigan for a visit. He'd asked me in past, about potential of our seeing Charlie's grave site. I'd be happy to do that if I'm here. Have a trip schedule to Wisconsin for a family gathering during part of the time the Michigander will be in Michigan from overseas.

I'd been to Charlie's wake and funeral, but not to grave site. So I did some checking just now, on it's location.

Meanwhile, Charlie's Mom asked to get my new phone number, among other info. I've moved recently. Have a long list of people to update, but only enough time to do the emergency/essential/priority ones so far.

I did call Charlie's Ph # and left Jo Ann a message.

Had a long talk with Jo Ann, Charlie's Mom last evening.

This is Memorial Day Weekend.

Headed out to Charlie's grave site, in a few minutes.

Strange how things come around full circle sometimes.

I worked in the Ingham County Court House in Mason for about 3 yrs, starting in 1976, shortly before I went to Timmins, Ontario for the first time. Mason is about 15 miles south by southeast of Lansing. Charlie and I both lived on Lansing's south side for many years, though we didn't meet and become friends until about 7 yrs ago, among Shania Twain fans at an ST concert in Grand Rapids in this same month, of 2004, just a few days before a couple of us drove up to Deerhurst Resort and Timmins again.

Well, illness overtook Charlie several months ago. His church in Okemos held the wake(s) and funeral. I attended one of each, after getting lost on the way, in some aromatic cow barns. I had to let my clothes air out a while, before I went inside the church for the funeral.

Anyway, Charlie was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, in Mason, the small town where his family had come from.

That cemetery is where I'm headed today. I was surprised to discover It's just 3 or 4 blocks from where I used to work, in the County Court House, when I was a younger man.

Meanwhile, about the same time that Charlie was being moved from S. Lansing, to Okemos for his funeral, I had bought a home over by Okemos. So again, tho the news was unknown to each other at the time, we were moving in the same direction at the same time, tho for different reasons.

I'm somewhat settled in now, at my larger condo between Okemos, Haslett and East Lansing. But I still have a lot of stuff not yet unpacked from my boxes. Charlie is probably somewhat settled in now, back in his final resting place in Mason.

But I wonder, how many more coincidences and discoveries await, after I get there.

Believe me, my friend, you will not be forgotten.

You live on, within every person you ever touched - and that's a lot.

Banzai.

Well maybe he did.

When I walked in the cemetery yesterday, I did not see him. I forgot to look for the giraffe, up there above the trees.

Did find his grave stone though.

His Mom, Jo Ann said it's okay to share her info about Charlie with others.

The cemetery is a peaceful place, in a peaceful town.

The mature shade trees, and the view through the distance, relax the eyes, and the mind.

It is a long cemetery, but not too wide.

A river runs through it.

Along the back.

Image

It is swollen and discolored now, from the heavy spring rains.

They have lasted surprisingly longer this year, into early summer.

Charlie's life was in some ways, like a river, that ran through our lives.

He was like a tall, cool, drink of water, on a hot, dry day.

When life was burdensome, his wit lifted our spirit.

When life was discomforting, his enjoyable and interesting presence distracted us for a while.
